Understanding Eeprom data in Nvram
When you go diagnostic screen, under "Memory Config", there is "EEPROM Ver.NO." and "00:00". EEPROM has 128 bytes data that holds the configuration of the hardware. So if you clone NVRAM from one box that does not have the same configuration, you might have some problem with TV pictures. When that happens, you might have an incorrect EEPROM data.

When the firmware starts up, it check to see the EEPROM data, (the address is stored at $0022269A, the data is stored at $23ceec), if the computed check sum 32 bit matches the $23cf6c, then these data will be used. Otherwise, on PH 6 and older board, the real EEPROM (24LC01) data will be used. On PH7/8 board, the data is stored on the flash at address $404000.

Now suppose you clone a valid NVRAM from one box (2224/1661) to another box (2244/1161), you have no audio or even image, try to play with the values in the EEPROM area. A single value change in the EEPROM area will let the box use real EEPROM data. If you only want to play with single byte (or bytes) in the EEPROM data, a proper check sum needs to be added. The BDM software provides this feature to let you change the values in the EEPROM area. By this technique, I was able to make 2244/1161 (very old box) work.

Buying boxes guide
ok guys i might be wrong but heres a tip:
if u want to buy a box buy a
2244\1661+
2224\1661+

if u buy from your city thats the best
from ebay if u do that ask them before u bid or you buy it this questions:
1.were have u used the box in what city , or do you know were that box was used?
2. up to what channels does it go to when u power up ?

this way u can go to tvguide.com or any other listings and under tv listings and punch in the zip code of that city and see what is the channel aragement and up to what channel does it go to if it matches it might work in your area. if u dont know how to find the zip code go to msn\maps directions and find out

to add to this, you can usually see through the vents on top to see the writting on the motherboard. ph7/8/9 are the easier ones to work with. at this time there is no way to auth premium channels, so if the box you buy didn't have them then you won't get them.

You need a local nvram and firmware from your area to clone to the box.
If the box is not from your area or cable co, then all you will get is analogue and any free digital channels.
If the box is from your area, then you will get any analogue, digital channels that the box was previously subbed too.
Also, if the box is from your area and only disconnected it can be turned back on using the "connect the box" feature of the bdm sofware.
The xc chip controls channel auth, so if the box was from your local area and if it had premium channels before, only then will you get them again. The xc chip controls ppv as well and if it's disabled then you can't turn it on.

Steps for using SPI log.
1. Configure the firmware to allow SPI log, program the flash.
2. Use serial cable connect your PC's COM1 to serial port of the DCT box. http://www.usbjtag.com/image/spicable.jpg
3. Start the SPILog.exe. Download at utility section.
4. Note there will be text files saved. One is SPI0E000log.txt and the other SPI07000log.txt. A binary file auth.bin will also be captured.

The SPI replay now automated with 0.3 of SPICommand.exe. Download at utility section.
