seeking Advice on how to properly spi a sbg6xxx
Hi guys,
I would like to get some advice from some experience users out here.
I recently fried my sbg6580 while experimenting with it. It's actually a good way of learning.
So to my question,
SBG6xxx modems are somewhat of a pain when using SPI.
Imagine, I'm using test hooks and when i have to turn the modem over to do the spi, the hooks tend to fall off etc...
I tried taping the spi onto the back of the board but that didn't work. I really don't want to solder. Can you give me any advice on how to go about this.
THanks!!
ps. I used the 3m soic, and that was awful. The thing has way too much tension.

Pomona SOIC clips have less tension, you can try them... BTW I know its a pain but you can get the test clips to stay if you mess with them a bit, don't turn it over once you have them on good

Thanks for getting back to me. I heard of the Panama clips. I just had no luck At all with the 3m soic.
I agree, that I shouldn't turn the modem over to apply the spi, but how can I get it to stay
At the exact place. Are you soldering the spi?
Again, many thanks, I really appreciate any input I can get on this

I have never had the need to solder, both test clips you see pictured and pomona soic clip work fine for me

I have a UART Serial flasher, it has 3.3v and 5v out and I use this to power the chip (NOTE: if you use this method of powering the chip, there is NO need to power your modem on)
In this link you can see how some mod their usbjtag to get voltage out, or you can use a usb cable and 5v (but at your own risk)

Thank you so much!!!!* I really appreciate your feedback.
Ok so simply connect the USB ttl to the vcc with the modem off.
I've heard of some users using 3 or 5 volts.** I guess it all depends on the modem.
I recently bought a usb ttl,* but I* have a bad feeling it's a cheesy one.
The guy who sold it to me said that the red one is better than the* blue one.** But they ran out of the red one.** It had to do with the voltage drops or something like that
Regarding the pamona 5252 test clip I noticed that there are 2 versions.** A soic and non soic version.
Look:

Vs.

Is there a difference?
Thanks!!!!!!!

For most spi 8 and 16 pin flash chips yes, the same applies (just make sure you have the correct pinout)... BTW Raspberry Pi is another device you can get 3.3v and/or 5v tap out of (just mentioning in case you have one lying around)cheeto wrote:Can I use the VCC option with all SBG modems?
