GM 411 PCM (512k)

Post by Enginetech »

I have the USBBDM NT that I just got last week.
Last night I wired a BDM connection to one of my spare PCM?s.
I connected the BDM per the information from this site but I am unable to get anything out of the PCM. I also watched the video where you connect to a PCM.

All of the registers show zero, and the when I try to detect the chip the software returns unknown flash type report these values 0000.0000.
I tried all three of the 411 PCM configurations that came with the software.

Any suggestions on what to do next would be appreciated.

Thanks

Help

Post by Enginetech »

Thanks for your help last night, I tried a number of things based on your suggestions but sill nothing.
I just wanted to confirm that there is no connection on BDM pin 5 and 9 to the PCM per the example on your site.
After our chat I:
? Confirmed the wiring again and it all looks good.
? Check continuity of the wires between the BDM and PCM. I used a little pigtail on my PCM and thought maybe it was bad.
? I visually checked for any bridges where I attached the wires and then and checked connection with a meter.
? Confirmed no short to ground plane that surrounds the main connection points
? I checked voltage at the EEProm and it was fine.
? I checked voltage at WPP and it was 11.7 (within speck).
? Checked my USB cable to the BDM
? Checked the PCM on my test bench to make sure it was still working.

Do you have any other suggestions?
If not, I may just try a different PCM.

Thanks again for your help

This is all I can think of.
Do not use detect to check connection.
"reset 1" to see from BDM OFF to BDM ON and some good value for the registers meaning the connection is good.
If you cannot detect the flash or get flash 0000,0000 but that is fine we can work this latter.
Key point is to get good values of register when "reset 1".

Next steps???

What I tried so far?
Bought another PCM and wired per the video and it would not respond.

Bought a dct2224 (PH6) and followed the instruction (lifted leg on cap, etc.) for the cable box and I get the following.
Copyright (C) 2010-2015
USB BDM NT 0.83
Target: DCT2224
-speed 0
-reset 1
-init
The DCT2224 does not respond the reset properly. Check your BDM connection
Script finished

All of the registers are still zero like I experienced with the PCM.
In all cases the GUI says USB Connected, and BDM on.
I bought this tool to make sure your BDM interface was working per our chat.

One time it did run the script that provided the menu but registers were still zero, read returns all NULL?s, and ID command returns

Unknown flash type!
Report these values http://www.usbjtag.com/vbforum 0000,0000

You can hear the cable box reset wth you start the interface. Likewise the PCM stops running code when i start the interface so something is happening.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help yesterday.
I have to tell you I feel a little silly after you discovered the issue.

I had some friends over yesterday when you helped me out and they gave me a hard time all day. I will be hearing about this one for a while.

Anyway??
I tested on 3 different PCM?s yesterday and was able to back them up, and one of the PCM?s I did an erase and a write :)

Great product at a great price, and your support is absolutely awesome.

Thanks again.
